Why does anyone confess to the police? While a plea bargain in court might lower your punishment, confessing to police can only hurt you. Yet people do it all the time.

Some confess to come clean(conscious) others do it to avoid the death penalty. Ones like Erik and Lyle use an excuse in order to obtain sympathy. Unfortunately there are ones due to mental illness or just to get attention. Every murder suspect should be made to undergo a complete psychological exam. The reason is because unless our current society has grown to accept homicide as routine, we should accept homicide as a subject that is not normal human behavior and treat it as such.

Your first case was the highest ranking officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. He had top security clearance, he flew a plane carrying Queen Elizabeth II and her husband on one of their Commonwealth visits across Canada. As a Canadian, when we learned the facts of his cases, we were shocked at how "normal" this man, Colonel Russell Williams, had seemed. Amazing police work and that interrogation got a standing ovation from every Canadian, law- abiding citizen. Everyone should watch the Dateline coverage, best I've seen on this criminal genius, to understand the crimes, charges and horrifying/cringe-worthy evidence they ended up with. You see how his crimes grew more serious and how evil and cunning he was. He met his match with that interrogating genius, culminating with 3 little words, "got a map?", when he knew he was screwed. The only person more shocked at the evidence? His wife of over 25 yrs, whose piano strings held all the photos of her husbands illegal "hobbies". He was quite concerned that "cops would be tearing up HER new home", while he was playing mental chess with this amazing police officer. Truly nightmare enducing but true crime lovers like me will be pinned to their chairs, so not to miss a thing, on this mesmerizing story. I had to watch it twice more as I kept thinking I missed something obvious in the crime part of the story, because it came together seamlessly in that room. I'm told it's now being used by police trainees and law students for examples of "how to do it right and let them dig their own grave". Sorry this is so long, I like to talk and write 😊. Stay safe everyone 😷.

You have the right to remain silent, ANYTHING you say, CAN and WILL be used as evidence AGAINST you in a court of law. The Supreme Court ruled a person cannot simply remain silent, they have to say: "I choose to remain silent." Say it and shut up. If they persist, say, "I want a lawyer" and shut up; because ANYTHING you say, CAN and WILL be used as evidence AGAINST you in a court of law.

It's very simple: If they have safe-fire mounting evidence, they won't need to try squeeze a confession out of you. I know certain pressure tactics are more than legal where I live but this kind of lying would get you fired.

I read a book written by a detective in Soviet Union and he told about their interrogating tecniques. One way to make murderers confess and face certain death penalty was to tell to a murderer that if he was a murderer in this case, the KGB is looking to hire him as an assasin. And the trick worked quite often.

Brad Miller

I don't even need to watch the video to answer this. But let's get the obvious out of the way; yes, some people confess because they are guilty. Now, the reason *innocent* people confess is because the police, prosecutor, and public defender, if you're unlucky enough to be assigned one, threaten you with the worst possible outcome if you don't plea (which is illegal, BTW). They will also make you promises that they can't keep. You see, what they don't tell you is that the plea agreement you sign doesn't actually mean anything. The judge has the authority to accept your signing as a confession of guilt, but then completely disregard the agreed upon sentence and sentence you however he pleases. The whole thing is really messed up and backwards. It also doesn't help that you've been sitting in a cell for however long and will do anything, even confessing to a crime you didn't commit, just to get it all over with.

I don’t understand how it’s legal to lie in these situations. Especially when it’s been found to cause the accused to feel pressured and admit to something they did not do . Then thrown a few dollars after serving years in prison , wrongfully convicted . I’m sure there are other ways to convict the true criminal..

This also shows and prove, not to trust certain police officers. 17 years is terrible. Now put a police officer in that situation. As a police officer can and will use their authority as a means to escape their own persecution. Let's reverse the situation. I talk to the police, cause I study law and generally know what to say. Who needs a lawyer when one becomes one themselves. One doesn't need a degree in law to represent themselves. When I have made other police officers angry, in a more relaxed state even being under more stress, it shows which officers shouldn't actually be police officers. Welcome to Montréal, Québec, Canada.

They’re not your friend. Their job is to lock you up. If they really had so much evidence they wouldn’t need your confession so bad. Even if you did do it confessing will put you at a disadvantage. What they think you did doesn’t matter, what they can prove does. Knowing why you did it matters no where near as much as knowing THAT you did it. Also lie detectors are inadmissible in most states.

I have nothing to say. I want a lawyer. Am I free to go? Thats all that is required to be said. If they do have the evidence which they claim, you'll be arrested and your attorney can sort it out. If not, you are free to go. More often, they are interviewing because they do not have evidence and WILL get you to incriminate yourself, even if you're innocent. I have nothing to say. I want a lawyer. Am I free to go?

I wonder if this thing about being able to lie in an interview is just a US thing. I'm a cop in the UK and I'd get torn apart in court if in interview I claimed to have evidence I didn't. Regardless, notice one thing a lot of these people in the clips don't have. A lawyer/solicitor. It absolutely blows my mind that people are happy to be interviewed without one present or even without a consultation. I know that if the tables were turned, I'd have a lawyer there.

Police are scumbags. And I say that as someone who supports law enforcement, in principle, in a major way. But the complete betrayal of truth and honor are disgusting. Especially knowing how often they chase convictions rather than truth. One of the acts of which I am most proud is, after becoming friends with a cop, talking to him about these things to the point that he quit completely. Even trying to go to other jobs in law enforcement, he came back to me and said "I just can't do it anymore. I can't go along with it."
