Changing someone’s mind is hard. I believe a huge part of the reason boils down to the fact that we often trigger one another’s emotional defenses before the content of our arguments can be evaluated.
That’s why in this video I want to give you 5 do’s and don’ts to actually change someones mind and we’ll be using Steven Crowder’s “Change My Mind” segment to do it .

⏰TIMESTAMPS⏰
0:48 - #1: When persuading someone, go slow.
2:10 - #2: Build rapport.
4:08 - #3: Don't use insults.
5:49 - #4: Concisely summarize how the other person feels.
7:45 - #5: Make it clear that you're speaking from your individual perception of reality.

I think if this is best used with someone that is an acquaintance or a person with which you see with some regularity. I also think that creating rapport should always be the goal when meeting someone new no matter the occassion, setting, or ultimate goal. Crowder reads his audience and "debater" pretty well. His audience, of course. Is not ONLY on site, but on social media. So, when he breaks the "norms" it is usually with a broader viewpoint in mind. When the person in the opposite chair starts to ONLY talk in circles, uses misinformation, or uses emotionalism without any logical support, he will expose them by citing truths. Ben Shapiro uses logic, facts, and will counter attack...but rarely uses a forum that establishes rapport. Most questions Ben gets are a "gotcha" type, so there is little reason to do otherwise. Crowder actually wants to connect, but that goes both ways. You missed the most obvious way Crowder approaches a "change your mind" moment; it's reversed. He asks you to change HIS mind, putting the other person's ideas FIRST. Then, thru discourse, he slowly introduces his alternative...or even similar ..opinions. He also looks for areas of AGREEMENT as often as possible.

Great points in this video but i have to say the whole "change my mind" concept is a complete farce of a marketing tool try and get this guy clicks. How can you say he's coming from a place of intellectual honesty when he already has his mind made up coming into a debate? Clearly the "change my mind" is for theater.

Hmmm.. The emailed review for Charisma University at 12:19 is directly quoted from an anonymous worker from Theranos. Who didn't have the credentials to get hired, but did anyway based on his charismatic nature.... Either I don't think that's a real review, or the reviewer is stealing that quote from the Theranos documentary. Anyone else notice that?

I've changed my mind on many things, but most, if not, all of them didn't contain a civil discussion. They were motivated by others, but I did most of the work myself. It's impossible for someone to change your mind, but they can help you change it yourself.

I absolutely hate people like Crowder who garner all of their attention, seldom by being truly challenged, but by dunking on random laypersons on his home court. Then posts videos on the internet so everyone who doesn't understand the situation can see the opposite position being ripped apart and be swayed to Crowder's opinion. Then go to work and talk to people like me, trying to emulate his points and it's just annoying. And then the next day, you can tell they went home and re-watched the video because they try again with renewed vigor, but they'll never get anywhere because in the end, they're trying to "win" like their hero, Crowder. *sigh*

I like most of his change my mind episodes. He’s had a couple where i think he gets too aggressive and tries to make himself the authority so he can take over the conversation. Usually i see this if he’s struggling to make a good argument or he is speaking with someone who is equally as good at speaking. Usually this means he would cut somebody off before they are done talking. I still like his content though.

Sometimes you just choose the worst people as an example for these videos. When you actually know what his channel is about it feels cringy to watch. He targets people that are generally less informed meaning even if statistics disprove his point he can still control the debate. He has yet to even concede a point let alone change his mind after all his videos.

In online debates I have found it critical to not insult people. No matter how rude, how many people gang up on you, or how much your pride is hurting. Stay focused on the issue. Stay objective. Force them to confront facts. "You don't prove your point until you disprove theirs." and another favorite quote is "Slander is the tool of the person who has lost the argument." Pride yourself on not being right but rather on finding and adhering to the truth. Any other intention is to inflate your pride

Steven Crowder is a terrible example for someone that wants to change someone else or his own mind. He specifically picks up random people off the street that the majority of the time don't know much of the topic in order to make *HIMSELF* like the smarter one of the conversation. Crowder points can be completely wrong but since the people that he picks can't counter his point, he can create the illusion of being right. And this is not by accident either. Why debate people with knowledge of the nuance of the topic in order to change their minds when you can create a video that shows an unprepared person being unable to counter their prepared arguments that people will use to reassure their position regardless if they are correct or incorrect.

Hitchens is fun to watch and has fantastic wit but he is a poor debater and overall his stance only wins through overwhelming any sort of understanding that may be made. A clip i once saw had him debating a religious man (as it often goes), a crowd member asked a question of him and he flat out did not answer and instead went off on tangents and personal attacks on his opponent. The crowd loved it and it was fun to watch but he never definitively answered the question. His answer was less sure then the reason the crowd asked in the first place. But he won simply because he overwhelmed the guy actually trying to argue points. Hitchens is poor on many fronts but his charisma and wit make him a great person to watch and listen too.

Toby O'Neil 5 сарын өмнө
Does he? Logical discussion, illogical discussion, persuasive verbatim, political rhetoric and personal opinion are not subject to just one side but it turns out that one side is a better conduit of those things and displays it in more abundance. Crowder covers everything the video says, both positive and negative. Is there any left speakers who encompasses all of that and also has a ready archive available to use? Is their a left leaning speaker who can match what Jorden Peterson puts out across the board? These alt right guys are perfect examples to highlight persuasion and discussion tactics. And using them as an example signifies nothing except an acceptance of their ability to persuade and debate and through that a way for breakdowns of what they do. It is not 'liking' them that gets them on the show.

I'd like to see someone retaliate on Steven's domination of space in these segments. He's always leaning into the other person's space in a way that's aggressive and borderline physically threatening. Just once, someone should match his posture and lean into him the way he leans into others, going literally nose to nose with him, rather than meekly leaning back and conceding the space, as the subjects in this video do. It wouldn't change anyone's mind, but it would underscore on an obvious bullying tactic.
