How do you become a man? Cultures around the world have long believed it doesn’t just happen with age - certain steps need to be takenand recently the topic has gotten even more complicated with concerns of toxic masculinity rising.
Well in this video I’ll be using Cobra Kai to break down what I see as the 4 stages men go through in the road to quote unquote manhood, where guys go wrong, and what you can do to get to the next phase of growth.

⏰TIMESTAMPS⏰
0:00 - Intro.
0:34 - Stage #1: Boyhood.
2:00 - Stage #2: The eager student.
4:33 - Stage #3: The wanderer.
7:51 - Stage #4: The free thinker.

"I told you that 'juvenile delinquent' is a contradiction in terms. 'Delinquent' means 'failing in duty.' But duty is an adult virtue-indeed a juvenile becomes an adult when, and only when, he acquires a knowledge of duty and embraces it as dearer than the self-love he was born with. There never was, there cannot be a 'juvenile delinquent.' But for every juvenile criminal there are always one or more adult delinquents-people of mature years who either do not know their duty, or who, knowing it, fail." Lt. Col. Jean V. Dubois (Ret.), p. 120 -Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers

"some of the things of manhood (or in this case ck) are destroying the things he cares about" omgg wow..so true. I think Johnny tries to be tough with Robby or something, but he actually just needs to let himself be open and vulnerable with Robby. Those are the parts he wants. He wants his dad to care for him.

I would liken mentorship to being a musician or other artist. If you worship one band completely to the exclusion of other artists and styles you will never develop your own style and will only ever sound like a pale imitation of your one inspiration, and everyone will hear it. On the other hand, if you listen widely to other artists and genres, then through that pleurality of influences you are much more likely to come up with a genuinely interesting and original sound of your own. Same with mentors. Don't look for one person to follow blindly, look for ideas that work for you, from wherever (and whoever) they may come, and from that mix of influences, your own adult personality will emerge. That is how you become your own person in my opinion.

This kind of makes me think about One Piece, about the relationships between Luffy and Shanks. Shanks is the mentor we're introduced by letting a weaker man bully him by spilling booze over him, and Shanks just lets it happen, then laughs with his friends when the bully leaves - even though Shanks could easily have stopped or killed him with no effort. Then later, that same bully tries to kill Luffy - a child - just for calling him names. One isn't concerned about how the world sees him. One is. (Though the problem is still that the show kind of puts emphasis on Shanks being admired later on for being one of the strongest characters in the show more than his admirable sense of self-worth, and Luffy - unlike the lessons taught in this video - doesn't stray from what he learned from Shanks and doesn't ever evolve into a Wanderer or Free Thinker).

I like to add that realistically you shouldn't have just "one" teacher in life or study a "single" creed/book/philosophy. As you go through life, and if you truly want to grow as a person, then your going to be influnced by "many" different teachers and study a lot of different creeds/ books/ philosophies. Each with their own different approaches, some very different from each other, but each will help you. Each of these men and women will come to you in different parts of your life fo teach you something valuable In that stage of your life. They all have their own flaws and strengths to them, but you'll get something from all of them. And it doesn't stop. Even as an adult you'll come across new people who will influence you. By the end of your life, you won't just have "one" book by "one" author that will help shape who you'll become, but an entire library. And in this libary you will have your own personal book.

I flipped a few times between stage 2 and 3 with different mentors. As soon as I got to a certain lesson which I found to be unfair to others or too unreasonable in some way, I began to worry about the validity of everything else the mentor had told me. Then I find a different mentor and the cycle repeats.

There's lot of obvious experiences that make someone a 'real man': losing virginity, getting drunk, growing a beard, killing in combat, etc. And certain character attributes: loyalty, discipline, courage etc. Most people know these. Very, very few have them though. The modern world isn't set up in such a way to allow real men to exist.

In retrospect wrestling shaped me into who I was which was good . Sort of similar to Johnny Lawrence with Karate. I started in the 4th grade as a scrawny kid who got beat up all the time to becoming the 2nd freshman captain out of 20 guys. In my 8th grade year I went 28-9 in varsity and was the champion in conference. A lot of this stuff in the video are things I have been through. I stopped caring if I was called pretty boy for tying my hair back on the team. And if I could do it all over again I would; to improve on those mistakes made along the way from the past. I wish I could’ve qualified for state but I ripped back muscles in the end which was the killing blow to my career. Just like Johnny getting kicked in the face. But I must admit it was a great journey and without it I wouldn’t be half the man I am today.
